The way this the “Where’s My Droid” app works is by using attention words. When you lose your android phone, you can then simply text your phone from another number your specific attention words. When your lost phone receives the words via text message, it will signal back the location of your phone.
Step 1: Navigate to the Google Play store on your smart phone. Select “apps” and do a search for “Where’s My Droid.”
Step 2: Install “Where’s My Droid” on your phone and open the app once it’s finished downloading.
Step 3: Once you’re at the main menu, select the “Attention Words” option.
Android Track Phone tip: Make sure you have GPS enabled beforehand. It must also be on for you to be able to remotely track it from another phone.
Step 4: Enter a word or two into the GPS box that you will be able to remember when you lose your phone. The default is “WMD GPS.”
Step 5: Go back to the main menu and select “GPS Setup.” You can then customize and enable any features you find useful.
Quick tip: You can also track your phone from the developer’s website using the commander option here: http://wmdcommander.appspot.com/
So that was the quickest and easiest way that I’ve found to track your phone. Of course there are tons of great apps available besides “Where’s My Droid” that have other cool features.
How to Find Your Lost Phone Without Previously Installed Apps
The great thing about owning an android is that you can track your phone using a specific app even after you lose it. That’s because “Plan B” was designed to be enabled using the Android Market website and here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Navigate to the Android Market website here: https://play.google.com/store/apps?hl=en and do a quick search for “Plan B.”
Step 2: After you download and install the app, simply open it up and let it run. It will automatically start and forward the location of your lost phone directly to your Gmail email address.
Quick tip: After you check the location through Gmail, you can then text the word “locate” every 10 minutes to your phone to get updates.
It’s really that easy. Unfortunately the Plan B application isn’t compatible with some of the older android phones, but if you have a newer expensive phone, it will certainly come in handy when you need it most.
Another great thing about Plan B is that even if you have your GPS disabled, it can switch it on remotely and start tracking your phone using cell phone towers and the GPS.
How to Find a Stolen Phone Without GPS or Tracking Apps
If you’ve already lost your phone and don’t have any tracking apps installed or have GPS disabled, then you may want to take a look at some of these useful tips to Android track phone.
Story: I’ve actually lost my phone before after a worker mistakenly threw my entire bag into the trash while I was swimming at the lake. My only set of car keys was also in the bag along some clothes. After calling the phone a hundred times I ended up returning to the lake and locating the dumpster area in the middle of the night with some friends. Thankfully my sound was on and I was able to call it and figure out which dumpster it was in. After digging through a few bags I found the phone, my keys and some sandals. I think I was driving a BMW at that time and my car key is digital, which means it would cost more to get a replacement key than it would to buy a new phone.
This is most people’s first resort when they are unable to find a phone. If you’ve simply misplaced it you will be able to hear your ring tone and find it lying about the house. If the phone was misplaced and someone found it lying about, then hopefully they will answer and tell you where you can pick your android phone up. If it was stolen, then chances are they aren’t going to pick up, or they’ve already removed the battery.
Quick tip: You will know if they removed the battery if there is no ringing and it goes straight to voicemail.
Offer the “Thief” A Reward via Text Message
Since you don’t know yet if your phone was stolen or if you lost it and the person who found it is holding onto it, it may be worth a try to offer some kind of reward for its return. It’s totally up to you how much your phone and its contents are worth to you.
Use a friend’s phone to text your lost phone. Offer a cash reward if they will call you back and arrange a meeting to return it.
Quick tip: Make sure you reassure them in your initial message that you simply want your phone back and are willing to pay money for it.
